Serum phosphohexose isomerase.

چکیده
In 1933 Lohmann (1) demonstrated the existence of phosphohexose isomerase, the enzyme which mediates the reversible conversion of glucose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, in dialyzed frog lnuscle extracts and in simple aqueous extracts of yeast, heart, kidney, liver, and brain. Tank6 (2) and, more recently, Somers and Cosby (3) have found this enzyme to be present in pea meal. Slein (4) has obtained a partially purified preparation of phosphomannose’ isomerase from rabbit muscle. Although several studies have referred to the wide-spread distribution of phosphohexose isomerase in tissues (4, 5), this enzyme has received relatively little investigative attention. The present study shows that a considerable degree of phosphohexose isomerase activity is present in the serum of several species, including man. The properties of this enzyme in human blood serum are characterized, and quantitative data on its activity in various sera from patients with disease are submitted, in order to indicate the possible physiological significance of this enzyme in serum.

Significance of serum phosphohexose isomerase, hexokinase and aldolase in carcinoma ovary.
The serum phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), aldolase and hexokinase activities have been determined in 36 patients of carcinoma ovary with different clinical stages and in 25 healthy normal female subjects. The serum PHI and hexokinase levels were significantly elevated (P less than .001) in all the stages of malignancy while serum aldolase was significantly elevated only in stages III and IV of m...
متن کاملEffect of 6-methylpurine on phosphohexose isomerase and lactic dehydrogenase activities of plasma, erythrocytes, liver, and skeletal muscle.
Although it has been stated that plasma or serum enzymes are derived from the destruction of cellular elements in the blood or tissues (8), indirect evidence has recently been accumulating that enzymes may pass outward from the cell into the extracellular fluid and thence into the circulation in ways other than those involving necrosis or destruction of the cell (2, 3, 5, 8). It has long been k...
متن کاملClinical significance of serum lactate dehydrogenase, phosphohexose isomerase, aldolase and hexokinase in prostatic carcinoma.
The enzyme activities of Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). prostate fluid LDH isoenzymes phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), Aldolase (ALD) and Hexokinase (HK) were determined in the sera of 77 samples of males. There were 12 cases of carcinoma prostate with metastases, 15 without metastases, 25 with benign prostatic hypertrophy and 25 nontumor. The enzyme activities of nontumor and benign group were sta...
متن کاملClinical significance and source of raised catalytic activities of phosphohexose isomerase in the CSF in meningitis.
The value of phosphohexose isomerase (EC 5.3.1.9) determination in the CSF in the diagnosis of meningitis was tested under routine conditions. In 48 patients with untreated bacterial meningitis, enzyme activity concentrations between 40 and 2335 U/l were measured, whereas the highest phosphohexose isomerase activity concentration in 92 patients with viral meningitis was 34 U/l. Lysis of the CSF...

SYNOPSIS The activities of phosphohexose isomerase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase have been studied in the vaginal fluid of women from the gynaecological departments. Women from these departments gave a very high false positive rate, though no cases of carcinoma in situ were not detected by estimating phosphohexose isomerase levels. It gave considerably better results in malignancy than 6...
